50 years back, racist comments were widespread and many people at large were snubbed at being inferior to the "white race". Today, the world has overcome the evil traits of racism. AND SO IT SEEMS. Aparently i was wrong.And the racist comments thrown at Shilpa Shetty on the reality show Celebrity Big Brother house was enough to shake our stagnant minds on the current, yes, current issue of racism.
Although Jade apologises for her nasty behaviour, the damage has indeed been done.
Where do we stand today when we talk about racism?
Dont we respect other cultures?
Is there racism amidst the Indian community itself?
In case you hadnt followed the show,i've taken this from Jon Stock's article on LAST WORD in THE WEEK.
1.One of the other housemates, Jack Tweedy, who is in the unfortunate position of being Jade Goody's boyfriend,suggests that Shetty should pick chicken bones out of a lavatory with her teeth. also that "..we should put her out in the garden and lock the door"
2.Goody describes Shetty as "She is apparently some Bollywood actress but i've never heard of her. For all I know, she could be someone of Old Kent Road.She is f****** sly.She makes me feel sick.She makes my skin crawl.I wouldn't trust her as far as i could throw her.She isn't genuine.I've seen her whispering,laughing behind people's backs."
3.Goody's mother, Jackie,constantly refers to her as "the Indian" and refuses to pronounce her name properly.
4.Danielle Lloyd,glamour model watches Shetty apply facial hair bleach and says: "She wants to be white.She is a dog." she also said when Shilpa handled food,"You don't know where those hands have been "
Also Jo O'Meara,ex singer with S club 7 adds: "Indians are thin because they dont cook food properly."

Yeah..I came across this news item too....Till abt last week, racism and the related terms were dormant..but then thanks to this show, they have sprung to life again...
The Worst part is some Indians call it "publicity stunt...something to bring Shilpa back to the limelight"....Crap ! Resons,gossips and gupshups apart,these sorta rotten and abusive words shouldn't have been used..
Now this is what i call stupidity. When everything points at it being a downright racism issue, people talk about it being Shilpa hogging the limelight. Its like she hasnt gone through enough already!
No one deserves to be treated like this.And it's good that it happenned. People can now see it nice and clear.It cant get any more clear than this. Absolutely disgusting.

Woah!!! This proves the fact that Americans have the mental capacity of a 10 yr old!....And yeah Indian government has always been like this....looking for a tiny publicity stunt in everything.....eg; Karunanidhi, Veerappan(there was this rumour that somebody else had died), now shilpa shetty.

Don't think she ll be recieved well when she comes to India. Donno wat purpose it serves(her coming to India). Once a racist, always a racist. she won't become an anti-racist overnight.

pretty interesting topic to debate ... and i can understand the sensitivity of the issue . What jade goody has told or rather crapped about shilpa shetty is pretty disturbing . But there are other things we need to understand about the complexity of the issue and not over-simplify it as adownright racist behaviour . true , the comments made were racist in nature BUT were they spoken with racist intent? What i am trying to mean is that JADE GOODY IS JUST AN ATTENTION-SEEKING ASL who knows shit about racism . All she wanted to do was gain attention by bad-mouthing her fellow mates - some of her earlier comments which stand as a testimony to her IQ
1) "whose saddam hussain? is he a moslem boxer?"
2) "do they speak portuguese in portugal? i thought they speak that only in brazil... oh! really - isnt portugal a part of spain."
She had been in the same show 4 years earlier and made some pretty disturbing comments as well . Infact , she was rated by BBC as 4th worst person in britain( goes to show how jobless bbc is :D)
So , what do u expect a person with these qualities to behave like? I would rather blame shilpa shetty for taking part in this show .
reason :
1)big brother has been around for 7 years and everyone knows how humiliating it could be . previous contestants have suffered from depression to mental breakdown ... I am sure Shilpa would have know these facts b4 signing up .
2) everyone participating in the show will know who the other contestants are . Knowing that this game is mainly a battle of survival - where contestants will do anything to win - wasnt she dumb enough to find out what she mite face in the show
3) shilpa didnt participate to win the prize - victory would be a bonus - since SHE WAS ALREADY PAID 3.5 CRORE INDIAN RUPEES to participate in it . And her mom is repeatedly giving interviews about the determination of her daughter to win and fight against the odds ... Bollywood directors - Any aunty roles up for grabs?
And so yeah , jus coz a goody who happens to be white makes a nasty comment on a shilpa who happens to be brown - we hype it to be a racist issue... WE (esp the media) ARE TO BLAME OURSELVES FOR HYPING THIS BULLSHIT , I remember Star news channel repeatedly showing this crap for 12 hours non-stop .
leave other nasty comments made by goody . ytf do we always over-react and term any comment made on our skin colour as racist . Are we insecure about ourselves? if someone calls you a brown - why are you offended? we are afterall BROWN ! and be proud of it .
And ytf should Kamalnath , commerce minister takeup this issue with british parliament . Comeon guys , get over it ! we have lotsa other issues to deal with ... and yeah there are tonnes of real "racism" happening around the world . like for instance , NRI workers suffer in gulf and southeast asia as slaves, robbed of their passports , work permits and their rights .
I live in multi-racial country . I do get subtle racist taunts and sarcasms from cab drivers , vendors , canteen-owners etc etc . But fuck I care ..... Because only when you react to these kinda stuff - it blows out of proportion ...

forecast : the next thing thats gonna happen after shipa returns is 6 week semi documentary programme on star news about her "harrowing" experiences in UK . and 40 million Indians will tune to watch the show - CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY .. and we ll have another post to discuss about it as well

It's bad enough that every damn news channel flashes this woman's face, every hour of every day, masquerading it as real news. Now, half of the indians in the 'blogosphere' seem to be churning identical opinions about the same issue. The other half are busy commenting about it. Just let it go. It was just the senseless talk of some woman who couldn't even graduate high school. Also, we indians aren't exactly a model for equality and amity amongst poeople of different ethnic backgrounds.
the whole issue is hardly worth a comment, let alone the media frenzy...
oh, and neither is the engagement of two film stars.
